Remsen Pioneer Taken By Death. Mrs. Dena Henning Enjoyed Long and Healthy Life.
Last rites were conducted in St. Paul’s Evangelical church in Remsen. Rev. Paul Wuebben, the pastor, officiating, for Mrs. Dena Henning, 87, pioneer resident of Plymouth county. Mrs. Henning died Wednesday after a brief illness. She enjoyed robust health all her life.
Dena Wimbecker was born in Ost friesland, Germany, June 30, 1849, and grew up there. She was married to Engelbert Henning there in 1870. They came to America in 1881 and farmed near Minouka, Ill., for five years and then came to Remsen. They settled on a farm south of Remsen and later bought a farm northeast of town. In 1904 they moved into Remsen. Mr. Henning died two years later.
Mrs. Henning is survived by five children, Ben Henning, Le Mars; Mrs. William Oltmanns, Milbank, S.D.; Mrs. Thiel Raveling and Mrs. Reinholdt, of Valley City, N.D., and John Henning, of Remsen.
Mrs. Henning was one of those good souls who came here in the pioneer days with her husband and gave years of her life and energy in the cultivation of the virgin soil. She was a woman who clung steadfastly to her early Christian training at the home and in the school. She was beloved by everyone of her many acquaintances because of her geniality and her splendid Christian traits. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Feb. 2, 1937, page 1.
