Father John Agnes Akron native dies in Milwaukee

Services for Father John P. Agnes, 77, former Marquette University religion teacher and minister to the Jesuit Community for 18 years, was held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 27 at the Gesi Church, Milwaukee, Wis.

Agnes, a native of Akron, Iowa, was ordained in the Society of Jesus in 1932 at St. Mary's College, St. Mary's, Kansas. In the fall of 1935 He came to Marquette to- teach- religion and also became minister of the Jesuit Community. As minister he was responsible for food, clothing and lodging of the Jesuits in Milwaukee. He stopped teaching religion in 1944 but remained as minister until 1953. In 1953 he went to Campion College, Prairie du Chien but in 1955 became rector of the Jesuit Novitiate at Ashkosh. He moved with the Novitiate to St. Bonifacius, Minn. He remained as rector until 1965 when he returned to Milwaukee to live.

He is survived by a brother, Matthew of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and four sisters, Miss Rose Hoffman, Washington, D.C., Sister Mary St. Vivian, Fort Dodge, Iowa, Sister Mary St. Matthew, Santa Barbara, Calif., and Miss Olive Agnes, Milwaukee, also a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Sibyl Campbell and Miss Helen Neary of Sioux Falls, S.D., along with Matt Agnes and Sister Mary St. Vivian of Fort Dodge returned Thursday from Milwaukee, Wis., where they attended the funeral of the uncle and brother, Father John Agnes, S.J.
