LONG RESIDENT PASSES AT HOME
NICHOLAS RIES, EARLY SETTLER IN LE MARS, SUFFERS LONG ILLNESS
Nicholas Ries, a resident of LeMars for fifty years, died at his home, 114 Fourth avenue SW., shortly after midnight, Sunday, following a long illness caused by pernicious anemia. He had been in failing health for many months. Last June he was compelled to undergo the amputation of one of his legs. Mr. Ries, while employed in the street cleaning department suffered an injury to his leg several years ago, and never fully recovered from the effects of the accident.
Nicholas Ries was born September 26, 1847, and was 76 years, 3 months and 12 days old at the time of his death. He was a native of the Grand Duchy of Luxemburg, Europe, where he received his early schooling and grew to manhood. When he was 21 years of age he came to America and worked at various Places in this vicinity, returning to his native country after a stay here of five years. He soon returned to the land of his adoption and farmed near Bellevue, Jackson county, before coming to Le Mars in the seventies.
He was united in marriage with Mary Baack, May 15, 1878, and they enjoyed a long and happy married life. To their union were born two boys and five girls, John Ries, who died at the age of eleven years, Frederick Ries, of Omaha, Neh., Mrs. Reuben Deviney and Mrs. Guy Barton of LeMars, Mrs. Ben Marienau, of Athol, S.D., Mrs. Roy Hilker of Paullina, and Mrs. Dick Roberts of LeMars. He also leaves eight grandchildren.
The funeral services will.be held Wednesday morning at ten o'clock at St. James church, Father Cooper officating, and the interment made in the St. Joseph cemetery.
Mr. Ries was a widely known in LeMars and surrounding country . For many years he was connected with leading grocery firms and was an employee of the late Alex Reichmann, and later with John Draudt, pioneer LeMars grocery man.
In later years he was employed in the city street cleaning department. Mr. Ries possessed a likeable disposition and was much esteemed especially among the older residents in the community where he lived for half a century.
