Joyce E. Port, 79, of Akron, died Monday, Jan. 23, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron with the Rev. Laurice Streyfeller officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Akron.
Joyce Ellen Port was born July 13, 1926, in Akron, the daughter of John and Mae (Rozell) Neunaber. She was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith. She attended Stewart country school and later Akron High School, where she graduated in 1944. She married Daryl N. Port April 20, 1947, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron. Together they are the parents of three children, Gordon, Gary and Gail. Joyce went to work for the Akron Creamery as a secretary and later the New York Life Insurance office in Akron. Later, she worked at the Akron schools as secretary, retiring after 35 years of service.
She was a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron, where she served as church treasurer, Sunday school teacher and liturgist. She was a 57-year member of the Hoschler American Legion Auxiliary in Akron, where she served as secretary. She also served as secretary for the Akron-Westfield Education Excellence Foundation. She was a 59-year member of the Pinochle club in Akron. She enjoyed her times working at the Akron Children Center with the 2- to 4-year-olds. She also enjoyed bowling and reading. But most all, she loved her family. She supported her children and grandchildren in all their activities. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Daryl of Akron; three children: Gordon Port and his wife Nancy of Nevada, Gary Port of Peoria, Ariz., and Gail Port of Conifer, Colo.; three grandchildren: Casey Port of Urbandale, Derek Port and his fiancé Keri Eiden of Eagen, Minn., and Aaron Port of Austin, Minn.; two brothers: Donald Neunaber and his wife Esther of Akron, and Marvin Neunaber of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and two nieces and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister-in-law: Lori Neunaber.
Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., all at the Carlsen Funeral Home, Schroeder Chapel, in Akron. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the funeral on Saturday at the church.
