Regina M. Popken, 84, of Akron died Sunday morning, July 2, 2006, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S,D.

Regina M. Popken was born July 22, 1921, on the family farm near Akron, the daughter of Frank and Helen (Schaefer) Thomas. She was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Akron. She attended school in Akron and graduated from St. Joseph's Catholic School. She was united in marriage to William Popken Jan. 30, 1946, in Akron. The couple farmed near Akron for many years. born July 22,

She was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Akron. She attended school in Akron and graduated from St. Joseph's Catholic School. She was united in marriage to William Popken Jan. 30, 1946, in Akron. The couple farmed near Akron for many years. William died May 5, 1966.

In 1969, she moved to town and began selling Stanley Home Products. In 1977, she began working at the Westfield School and later Akron-Westfield School as an office aide. She retired in 2002 after working for over 25 years. She was a lifelong member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron and the ladies of St. Joseph. She was an over 66-year member of Catholic Daughters of America and a longtime member of the Happy Neighbors Social Club. She enjoyed playing bingo and cards. She also enjoyed cooking, crocheting, reading, and flowers. But most of all, she loved her family, especially her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her four children,Barbara Ostermyer and her husband, Lyle of Akron, Tom Popken of Maricopa, Ariz., Betty Kelley and her husband, Jim of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Bob Popken of Akron; a brother, Raymond Thomas and his wife, Marie of Wildwood, N.J.; seven grandchildren: Melissa Beltman and her husband Kelly, Angela Kelley, Allison Gates and her husband Josh, Patrick Ostermyer and his
wife Lisa, Mark Ostermyer and his wife Rachael, Matt Popken and his wife Dawn, and Tracy Popken; six great-grandchildren: Jayde, Benton, Joey, Kaitlyn, Makenzie, and Kylah; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers, Leo, in infancy, Al, Lambert, and Carl; and a sister: Cordelia DeRocher.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron, with Monsignor Richard Zenk officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today (Wednesday) with the family present after 6 p.m. There will be a Catholic Daughter's of America Rosary at 4 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Casket bearers will be Patrick Ostermyer, Mark Ostermyer, Matt Popken, Tracy Popken, Kelly Beltman, and Josh Gates.
