AKRON, Iowa -- Harold "Bud" Jammerthal, 71, of Akron died Friday, Jan. 13, 2012, at a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Akron. Interment will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff. Online condolences for the family may be made atwww.waterburyfuneralserviceinc.com.
Harold was born Aug. 20, 1940, in Akron, the son of Harold and Gladis (Lower) Jammerthal. He attended school in Akron and was a lifelong resident of the area. When he was a teenager, he worked at McNally farms and was employed there for a number of years.
He married Jo Sandra Sprenger at First Baptist Church in Akron on March 29, 1958. The couple lived in Ireton, Iowa, for two years before moving to Akron. In the 1960s he became associated with Wilbur Hasenbank in the carpentry business. He later farmed for himself and took over his father's corn shelling business.
Bud was an avid hunter and fisherman, being especially proud of the 18-pound catfish he caught at the Big Sioux River. He also was a fan of country music, with George Jones being his favorite artist. As his health declined in recent years, he received dialysis treatments three times a week in Sioux City. He was able to make the best of the situation and made many new friends at the Floyd Pump ‘n Pak where he had coffee on the mornings before his treatments, some of whom gave him fresh-caught fish, corn for his squirrels and visited him at the hospital. He also enjoyed cookouts and special occasions such as birthday and holiday meals with his family.
Bud is survived by his wife, Jo Sandra of Akron; his son, Jeffrey (Katie) Jammerthal of Parkers Prairie, Minn.; three daughters, Jill Smith of Akron, Jenifer Jarmmerthal of Elk Point, S.D., and Robin Powell of Le Mars, Iowa; four sisters, Lorraine Kiewel, Lola Prothero, Imogene McKee, all of Akron, and Elaine "Dutch" Strong and her husband, Jack of Sioux City; his grandchildren, Hailey and Callie Jammerthal, and Nick and Austin Hemmingsen; and his mother-in-law, Martha Sprenger.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother and two sisters in infancy; three sisters, Shirley, Darlene and Lois Ann; a grandson, Ryan Todd Hemmongsen; and two sons-in-law, David Smith and Michael Powell.
