REMSEN PIONEERS PASS...
John Harnack died at his Remsen home on Friday morning, January 16, at the advanced age of 80 years, 8 months and 13 days following a brief illness of pneumonia.
John Harnack was born on May 3, 1850, in Mecklenburg, Germany. When three years old, he came with his parents to America. The family settled in Guttenburg, Clayton county, Iowa. On March 19, 1880, he was united in marriage with Louise Griemann and in 1884 Mr. and Mrs. Harnack moved to Plymouth county. Here on the sparsely settled prairie they proceeded to build up a farm home which they occupied for thirty-seven years. In 1921 Mr. Harnack retired and came to live in Remsen.
Mr. Harnack was a staunch member of the Lutheran church and conducted his life at all times in accordance with the precepts of that institution. In his intercourse with his fellowmen he was fair and upright, and his every transaction was carried out in such a manner that the honesty and integrity of his motives could not be doubted. His passing not only deprives his sorrowing family of a devoted husband and father, but also robs the community of a valued citizen.
Besides his sorrowing wife, four children mourn his loss. They are Mrs. Ernest Cutler, of Worthington, Minn.; Elizabeth Harnack, Detroit, Michigan; Bertha Harnack and John Harnack, of Remsen. Three other children preceded Mr. Harnack in death, one who died in infancy, Mary, who died sixteen years ago, and John, who died three years ago.
Mr. Harnack is survived by a brother, L.H. Harnack, and a sister, Mrs. Christine Kruse, of Sioux City. He is also survived by seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, January 10, at Christ Lutheran church with Rev. A. Noack officiating. Six nephews of the deceased, John and Adolph Witt, and Herman, Allison, Herb and Clarence Harnack acted as pall bearers.
Out of town relatives who attended the funeral were Fred Griemann, William Griemann, Mr. and Mrs. L. Weaver, Mr. and Mrs. W.G. Lenz, William Katter and Miss Alma Katter, of Garner, Iowa; Henry Grieman, Sr., Herman, Henry, Jr., and Wm. Griemann of Blue Earth, Minn., Mrs. C. Kruse, Miss Christine Witt, and Wayne Dennis, of Sioux City; Mrs. Harry Colby and H. Goethers of Sheldon; John Palas, of Postville; Misses Della, Hazel, Myrtle, Mildred and Oina Harnack, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Becker, Helmuth Becker and Miss Lillian Becker of Le Mars, Iowa. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Jan. 27, 1931, page 7
