Remsen Mayor Taken By Death.
Ross C. Harnack, 52, mayor of Remsen, died Tuesday in the Sioux Falls, S.D. Veterans hospital, where he underwent surgery about two weeks ago. He had been sick more than two years.
Born on a farm near here and a farmhand during his youth, he moved to California in 1925 and became a policeman in Santa Cruz. He returned to Remsen and joined the police force here in 1940.
In May, 1942, he joined the army and served through the African campaign with a reconnaissance unit, receiving his separation on October, 1943.
After further service as a policeman in Remsen, Harnack was elected mayor in 1949 and was re-elected last November. For five years he had been head of the youth recreation center in Remsen.
Councilman Clifford Dorr will continue as acting mayor until a successor to Harnack is named.
Unmarried, Harnack is survived by two brothers, Clarence and Herman, Remsen; and five sisters, Della and Hazel Harnack, San Fernando, Calif., Mrs. Mildred Radke, Spencer, Mrs. George Jacobsen, Lake Partk, and Mrs. Delbert Drefke, Cleghorn.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran church in Remsen, with American Legion and V.F.W. rites at the grave. - Le Mars Globe-Post, Thursday, Feb. 7, 1952.
