OLD RESIDENT DIES. F.W. Griepenberg Was Well Known Resident of Remsen
Remsen Bell-Enterprise: F.W. Griepenburg, well known resident of this community, passed away Tuesday morning in the Sacred Heart hospital, Le Mars. Mr. Griepenburg was taken sick suddenly on Saturday evening. He was 72 years old is survived by his widow and four children. The body was brought to Remsen the same day and the funeral took place Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock.
Follrich Wilhelm Griepenburg was born on March 8, 1856, at Holte, Ostfriesland, Germany. He attended the schools in that county and later attended a private school in the city of Marienheil. At the age of 20 years he entered the German army and served his country for three years.
In 1882 he was united in marriage to Ettje Milfs, and the couple continued to engage in farming in Germany for ten years, and came to the United States in 1892. On their arrival in this country they came direct to Remsen, settling on a farm ten miles south of Remsen and a year later Mr. Griepenburg purchased the farm. They lived there until 1913? when they retired and moved to Remsen.
Mr. Griepenburg was a member of the Lutheran church all his life and was a man of strict Christian principles. He had many acquaintances in and around Remsen and had a friend in every one of those who came in contact with him.
The deceased is survived by his wife and the following children: Mrs. Lena Lopau, residing near Kingsley, and Mrs. Matie Kohnke, Milf M. Griepenburg and Follrich Griepenburg, all residing in and near Remsen. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Sept. 4, 1928, page 4.
