Remsen Man Kills Himself With Revolver. John [Herman] Groth Found Lifeless in Home of Physician in Spencer. No Motive Assigned. Engaged in Implement Business For Many Years.
Herman Groth, 52, of Spencer, Iowa, well known former Remsen man, committed suicide by shooting himself Saturday night in the home of Dr. J. M. Fettes, in Spencer, for whom Groth worked as a collector. He was found dead in a room in the house with a bullet wound in his head. A 44 revolver was lying beside the body. No motive was assigned.
Dr. Fettes found the body when he went home. Coroner J. M. Sokol said Groth had evidently gone to the bathroom of the Fettes home, stood in front of the mirror, and shot himself through the head. No one else was in the house and no one has been found who heard the shot.
Funeral services were held for the dead man Monday at Spencer and the body taken to Remsen where commitment services were held in the afternoon at the cemetery in Remsen.

Herman Groth was born In Remsen where his parents were settlers in the early eighties and where he received his education and graduated from the Remsen high school. He was associated with his father, the late John Groth, one of the first implement dealers in Remsen, in business. They later entered the automobile business and were the first Ford dealers in that town. The elder Groth died fifteen years ago. Herman Groth sold out the business about ten years ago and he and his wife went to Spencer where they conducted the Green Gables tourist camp, a popular resort.
Of late years Mr. Groth acted as collector and business man for Dr. J. M. Fettes, well known former physician in Le Mars.
Mr. Groth was married when a young man to Miss Katherine Wandersheid, of Plymouth county, who survives him, with a son, Franklin, and a daughter, Azetta Groth; A sister, Mrs. E. J. Lang, lives near Remsen.
Mr. Groth was a member of the Masonic fraternity. He was well known in northwestern Iowa and had many friends. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Tuesday, Aug. 16, 1938, page 1.
