FIND REMSEN MAN DEAD IN HIS CAR THIS MORNING—SUCCUMBS TO FUMES IN CLOSED GARAGE. Robert Guttner, 77, Was Last Seen Saturday—Son Discovers Body.
The body of a 77-year-old Remsen retired farmer was discovered by his son in the front seat of a car parked in a closed garage this morning shortly after 9:30 a.m.
Robert Guttner had died sometime Saturday night of carbon monoxide poisoning, Coroner S. H. Luken told the Sentinel. The body was frozen because of the sub-zero temperatures over the weekend.
Mr. Luken termed the death as accidental. The car’s front window was rolled down half-way on the driver’s side of the vehicle. Mr. Buttner apparently had shoveled a path from the house to garage and had climbed inside the car to get warm, the coroner said. The snow shovel was found against the side of the garage.
Raymond Guttner, who also resides in Remsen went to his father’s home this morning and discovered the tragedy. The younger Guttner told investigating officers Coroner Luken, Sheriff Frank Scholer and Remsen Marshall Leonard Wevik he hadn’t seen his father since Saturday.
Raymond Guttner took his father’s dinner to the house Sunday noon, but didn’t find him home so left he meal on the table. No lights were on in the house that evening, the son reported. There was no alarm because the younger believed his father was attending a wake at the Fisch funeral home for Will Schmit.
Mr. Schmit, who had roomed at the Robert Guttner residence, had died Jan. 1 at Sacred Heart hospital after a long illness.
Raymond Guttner told the coroner he again noticed there were no light at father’s house Monday night and went to investigate Tuesday morning. The food left Sunday was still on the table.
Mr. Luken reported the car’s ignition was turned on, the gas tank was empty and a faint gas odor could still be detected in the garage.
Mr. Guttner was born in Germany and came to this country as a young man. Four sons survive. Mrs. Guttner died a number of years ago.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 9 at the Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen under direction of the Fisch funeral Home for Robert Guttner, 77, longtime Remsen man who was found dead in his car Tuesday morning, the victim of carbon monoxide poisoning. Rev. Alfred Christiansen will officiate and burial will be in the Remsen city cemetery.
Mr. Guttner was apparently the victim of a storm. He had gone out to shovel snow Saturday but his death was not discovered until Tuesday.
His death was discovered by his younger son, Raymond who said he hadn’t seen his father since Saturday. Investigating officers were Coroner S. H. Luken, Sheriff Frank Scholer and Remsen marshall Leonard Wevik. The coroner said the body was frozen indicating that death had occurred sometime before. He was found in the front seat of his car in his closed garage. The gasoline tank was empty and the ignition turned on. The window of the car was open.
The Guttner family had taken dinner to the victim Sunday but did not see him. They left the dinner on the table. They believed their father was visiting the funeral home where the body of Will Schmit had been taken following his death at the Sacred Heart hospital. Mr. Schmit had formerly roomed with Mr. Guttner until he was taken to the Sacred Heart hospital.
Mr. Guttner was born December 9, 1881 in Saxon, Germany. He was married to Martha Hesse on May 20, 1907 in Connewitz, Germany. Four months later they came to the United States. Mrs. Guttner died several years ago. Mr. Guttner was a retired farmer.
Survivors include four sons, William, Alfred, Elmer and Raymond all of Remsen. Several grandchildren also survive. Friends may call at the Fisch funeral home Thursday afternoon and evening. – Le mars Globe-Post, Jan 8, 1959, page 12.
