Miss Lena Bengtson

Miss Lena Bengtson departed this life last Tuesday, March 27, 1973 at Home Bethesda in the Bethphage Mission at Axtell, Nebraska, following an illness of several months duration. She was 79 years of age.

Lena Bengtson was born in Union County, S.D., October 5, 1893. Her parents were John and Anna Bengtson. During infancy and youth she was baptized and confirmed in the Brule Creek Lutheran Church north of Elk Point, SD. In 1916 the Bengtson family moved to Akron and almost immediately Miss Bengtson became a member of Immanuel Church. She continued as a member in good standing throughout her life.

Miss Bengtson is best known for the some 25 years she worked in the Akron Hospital. She began there shortly after it was opened about 1919 and faithfully and efficiently spent long hours in serving lovingly the many patients who were in her care there. She gave the kind of service that so many of them still remember with gratitude and admiration. In her home she was thought of as the standby in any problem situation or occasion. She seemed to know what to do and proceeded to go ahead to do it with fine leadership and strength. In 1952 she became a member of the Bethphage family in Axtell, Nebraska, and took residency there in Home Bethesda, She was grateful for fine care given, particularly during the time of her illness.

Among those who survive her departure are: her three sisters. Mrs. Hilda Waldon of Belle Fourche, SD., Mrs. Josephine Bohman of Rock Island, Ill., and Mrs. Tillie Linn of Sioux City. Iowa; her brother William Bengtson of Akron; her nieces, nephews and many other relatives as well as friends. Her brothers, Ben and August, and her sisters Hannah Bran and Mary Bengtson preceded her in death.

A brief memorial service was held at Home Bethesda Wednesday, morning, March 28, 1973. The Chaplain at Bethphage Pastor Charles Pollard was in charge. Funeral services were held Friday, March 30 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Pastor David J. Roy officiated with interment at Riverside Cemetery, Akron, Iowa. Pallbearers were Bernt Ustad, Norman Hans en, Lowell Bran, Otto Stene, Max Vreugdenhil and Orval Bengtson.
