Alfred John Swanson was born in Edosa, Skaraborgs Lan, Sweden, May 14, 1872. He was baptized during infancy and was confirmed in -the Lutheran Church of Sweden when he was a young than. He came to the United States of America April 15,1892. Since his brother, August, lived in Rockford, Illinois, he came to that state and took up residence in Chicago. There he become a foreman in a lumber yard and became quite proficient in sorting and measuring lumber. His work took him frequently into Wisconsin.
At a marriage service in Chicago, he was united in wedlock to Miss Amanda . This wedding took place January 26, 1901. Together they came to Akron February 26, 1908. They began life on the Schnelderheinze farm in 1915. In 1947 he moved to the home nearby and continued living there until his death. Throughout his life in our Akron community until his retirement not too long ago, he was a farmer. He became a member of Union Creek Church July 31, 1927 and continued his affiliation with Union Creek Church the rest of his life.
Mr. Swanson was a hard-working, friendly person. He was well known throughout the community as a very fine, well-liked neighbor. He especially enjoyed talking, singing and listening to that which was Swedish-particularly during recent years.
Among those who survive his departure are: his two daughters, Mrs. Elsie Carlson of Alcester, South Dakota and Mrs. Antoinetta Buum of Akron; his four sons, Stanley of Alcester, Arthur of Sioux City, Herbert and Leonard of Akron; his 12 grandchildren, his 28 great-grandchildren, many other relatives and friends.
His wife, in 1946, and also his son Walter preceded him in death.
The funeral service in his memory was held last Saturday afternoon, October 7, 1972, the Union Creek Lutheran Church, with Pastor David J. Roy, officiating. Mr. William Bohlen was soloist and sang "The
Old Rugged Cross." He was accompanied by Mrs. Henry Fickbohm, organist. The congregation joined in singing the English translation of "Tryggare Kan Ingen Vara"—Children of the Heavenly Father."
Alvern Buum, Wayne Buum, David Swanson, Eugene Swanson, Robert Swanson and Verdell Swanson were casket bearers. Interment was in the Union Creek Cemetery.Akron Register Tribune
