Henry Oetkin passed away at his home in Akron last Thursday evening September 16, 1920, at the age of 72 years, 6 months and 26 days, after an illness of three weeks of phlebitis, or inflammation of the veins.
Henry Oetkin was born in Marx, Germany, February 21, 1848. When fourteen years of age he sailed to America with his family and located at Bethalto, Illinois, where he lived until he moved to Le Mars, Iowa, in 1881. On April 27, 1897, he was married to Miss Fenna Bohms at Alton, 111. To this union were born three children — Mrs. Frances Molzen, Mrs. Celia Wachtman and Merwin Oetkin In 1897, Mr. and Mrs. Oetkin located on the farm east of Akron, which they still own. In 1902 they moved to Akron, which has since remained their home. Mr. Oetkin was a life-long member of the Order of Druids. He was a man of kindly disposition and made many firm friends.
Besides his wife and children, he leaves to mourn their loss four brothers— George, John, Ben and Tobias Oetkin, of Bethalto, Ill., besides other relatives and many friends who extend their sympathy to the bereaved family. His parents and three sisters departed this life before him. .
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. B. Prewitt at the Akron Baptist Church Sunday afternoon. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery.
Relatives present from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Wachtman, of Oldham, S. D.; Benard and Tobias Oetkin and niece, Miss Minnie Bowman, of Bethalto, 111.; Fred Bohms and daughter, Gladys, of Howard, S. D., and Mr. and Mrs. John Bohms and daughter, of Sioux City.
