Bertel F. Shoulberg departed this life last Thursday morning, January 21, 1971, at the St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City, following injuries suffered in an auto accident January 1 this year. He was 87 years of age .

Bertel Fritlof Shoulberg was born July 17, 1883, on the farm where his family lived northwest of Akron. His parents were Peter and Elsie Shoulberg. His birth took place in a newly-built frame home.

He was baptized December 4, 1883 as a member of Union Creek Church. September 8, 1901, he was confirmed in his church here at Union Creek. Mr. Shoulberg lived his entire life in this community, either in Union County or in Akron. At the time of his death he had been a member of this church longest of any member in the congregation. It was for over 87 years. He had remained active in his membership here throughout his life and had served on the Union Creek Cemetery Board.

He farmed for a number of years until he went into the trucking and automobile business in 1919. He was a partner with Grant Gassman until he sold his part of the business land retired.

But never was he inactive, since he had talent in art and drawing, he often was doing such things as making and keeping the Cemetery map up to date, as well as painting signs. He was frequently out on the farm he owned doing this or that job in such a way as to keep busy. He was a kind and friendly person who liked people and in various ways showed that friendliness.

Among those who survive his departure are: his brother, Henning of Akron, two nieces and two nephews, besides other relatives and friends.

The funeral service in his memory was at Union Creek Lutheran Church last Sunday afternoon, with Pastor David J. Roy officiating.
