Death struck into the ranks of Remsen business men Friday, October 6, when Fred G. Eichhorn, 66, widely known real estate dealer and a lifelong resident here, passed away in his home after a prolonged period of sickness.
An internal malady took Mr. Eichhorn to the Rochester, Minn., clinic three months ago. His case was diagnosed as serious and after eight days, during which time he enjoyed the company of Mrrs. Eichhorn and their son-in-law, C.R. Dorr, he returned to his home. He was confined to his home continuously as his condition grew worse, and during the last month was a sickroom patient, with no hope of recovery. The end came at 6:45 o’clock Friday evening.
Born February 20, 1884, on a farm eight miles southeast of Remsen now known as the Holler farm, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Eichhorn who had come to Iowa from Pennsylvania. On coming to this state the parents lived for short time in Iowa City, then spent a year in Le Mars and settled on their farm near Remsen in 1900.
The senior Mr. Eichhorn went into the grain business in company with Jos. Ahmann, who now lives in Sioux City. They operated the elevator which later became the Farmers Co-operative Co. While attending the Remsen public school Fred at times assisted the grain dealer partners which gave him the rudiments of business procedure.
Leaving school, Fred went into the dray business with Louis S. Willenburg, his brother –in-law. They operated successfully for a number of years and after selling out the business they bought a livery barn which stood on the site of the present Avalon ballroom. This business they conducted for several years, giving excellent service; also dealt in hay and feeds and built up a lucrative trade.
After dissolving the partnership of Eichhorn & Willenburg Mr. Eichhorn turned to the real estate business 38 years ago. In this he again was eminently successful. He dealt with town property and farm lands over several states and among dealers and buyers alike Mr. Eichhorn was held in high esteem because of his general ability but principally because of his keen judgment of real estate values and his honest business tactics. He was precise in representing property values to his clients, always strove to acquaint them to the fullest detail and to leave both buyer and seller satisfied with their transactions and with his methods.
Mr. Eichhorn dealt in real estate continuously and soley through almost four decades.
On June 10, 1908, Mr. Eichhorn married Marie Boehmke, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Emil Boehmke. The marriage took place in the Boehmke home.
Besides the sorrowing widow, surviving are three daughters and one son – Mrs. Clifford R. (Ruth Anna) Dorr, Remsen, Milton Eichhorn, Storm Lake, Mrs. Elmer (Emily Mae) Holtgrewe, Remsen, and Mrs. Joe (Annabelle) Hey, Clinton, Iowa. A son, Roy Edwin, passed away in 1934 at the age of seven years.
Three sisters and one brother also survive. They are Mrs. Gertrude Willenburg, Kansas City, Mo.; Arthur J. Eichhorn, Sioux falls, S.D.; Mrs. Joseph Ahmann and Mrs. Herman H. Koch, Sioux City, Three brothers, Carl, Clarence and Ernest, preceded Mr. Eichhorn in death.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon. Services at the Moeller funeral home were at 1:30 o’clock, followed by services in Christ Lutheran church and conducted by the pastor, the Rev. A. Noack. Burial was in the Remsen cemetery. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, October 17, 1950, page 4.
