CLAUS J. HAACK OF REMSEN DIES. Cold Develops Into Fatal Sickness of Prominent Citizen. Remsen Bell-Enterprise: The community mourns the death of another prominent citizen in the person of Claus J. Haack, a resident here for more than 20 years, who passed away at the family home six miles north of Remsen last Friday, April 11, following a two weeks sickness with pneumonia. He was 66 years old and a native of Germany. He is survived by his widow, three sons, one daughter, one sister and two brothers. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon with burial in the Remsen cemetery.
Mr. Haack contracted a cold two weeks prior to his death, and in spite of prompt and efficient care and family ministration his condition grew worse and his death was foreseen several days before the end came.
Claus J. Hack was born July 12, 1863, in Holstein, Germany, and at the age of five he came to the United States with his parents, the family settling on farm near Belle Plaine, Iowa. Claus attended the nearby schools and after he grew up he became a valuable assistant to his father on the farm, remaining at home until he was married, October 24, 1800, to Ella Kirchner, then of Keystone, Iowa. After their marriage the couple moved to Sioux county, farming there for seven years, after which they moved back to Benton county, near the town of Keystone, and spent one year farming in that vicinity. Mr. Haack then bought a farm northeast of Remsen and moved back there, the family occupying the place at the present time.
Mr. Haack was a lifelong member of the Evangelical Lutheran church and was one of the staunch members of St. Paul’s congregation here. He was a man of exemplary habits and fine Christian character, and one who won friends wherever he chose to cast his lot, principally because of his good disposition and gentlemanly manner. He was a kind and considerate husband and a devoted father, and his many friends will miss him in their social and business circles. The friends of the family join in extending their heartfelt sympathy to the sorrowing widow, children and other relatives. The deceased is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs. William Raveling, and three sons, Adolph, Clarence and Elmer, all of this community. Two sons receded him in death – George at the age of 13 years and Edward, who was farming near Inwood and died three years ago at the age of 38 years, of the same sickness which now claimed his father. There are two brothers, August Haack of Minneapolis and John Haack of Remsen, and a sister, Mrs. Margaret Witt, also of Remsen.
The funeral took place Monday afternoon with services at the family home at one o’clock, followed by services in St. Paul’s Evangelical church, the services being conducted by the Rev. Hugo Weichelt. Burial was made in the Remsen cemetery. The services were largely attended, many old friends from a distance joining the relatives and local friends in paying their tribute to a deserving and respected citizen. Pallbearers were the following old friends of the deceased: Gus Hanno, Peter Rann, Henry Englebrecht, George Ravleing, Wm. Siefke and John Asmussen.
