Remsen Pioneer Taken By Death. John J. Haack, 85, Remsen pioneer died Tuesday.
John J. Haack was born January 24, 1854, in Marne, Holstein, Germany, and with his parents, Claus Jacob and Catherine Hoack, came to the United States and settled on a farm in Benton county when John was 14 years old. He remained on the farm with his parents for 12 years and on June 30, 1880, was united in marriage to Augusta Jorgensen. The couple went to farming near Keystone and remained there four years and in 1885 came to their farm 10 miles northeast of Remsen in Meadow township.
Mr. and Mrs. Haack were the parents of 11 children of whom nine are living: Amanda, Remsen; Clara, Remsen; Mrs. Charles Schumacher, Remsen; Mrs. Howard Smith, Ocheydedan; Mrs. Ernest Schietzeit, Sioux City; Harry, Remsen, Mrs. Richard Janssen, Neptune; Alma, at home, and Mrs. Peter Treinen, Remsen. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, July 21, 1939, page 1.
