Pioneer Remsen Resident Dies From Old Age. Mrs. Mary Earnest, Widely Known, Was Early Settler In this Vicinity.
Mrs. Mary Earnest, pioneer resident of Plymouth county, died February 17 at her home in Remsen after an illness of a year due to failing power of age and complications. Mary Raber was born July 15, 1853, in Germany and came to America when a girl. She was united in marriage with August Earnest October 17, 1872, at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., where they lived for six years and then came west to Iowa City. Leaving there after six years residence they came to Le Mars and bought a farm in Plymouth county in 1884 near Remsen.
Mrs. Earnest, following the death of her husband, made her home in Remsen. She is survived by her children, who are Catherine Galles, Mrs. George Kramer, Mrs. Frank Hewicker of Remsen, John Earnest of Akron, Fred and Charles Earnest of Le Mars, Mrs. Theo. Treinen of Marcus and a brother, Fred Raber of Le Mars. She was preceded in death by her husband and two daughters.
Mrs. Earnest was a devoted wife and mother. She was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical church and its kindred societies. Gifted with a pleasing personality she was regarded as the best of neighbors and was widely esteemed in the community.
The last rites were held Sunday afternoon in St. Paul’s church in Remsen and were largely attended. Rev. Paul Wuebben officiated and interment was made in the Remsen cemetery. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Feb 22, 1938, page 1.
