MRS. FRED GRAUER DEAD. Complication of Diseases Takes Young Woman After Fifteen Months’ Illness.
Mrs. Fred Grauer of Cherokee county and a young woman well known in and around Remsen, having been born and reared in this community, passed away at her home south of Marcus last Sunday evening after an illness of a little more than a year’s duration. Mrs. Grauer was 27 years of age. Her death was due to tuberculosis and other complications with which she had suffered since March, 1921. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon, with services in Christ Lutheran church, Remsen, and interment was made in the Remsen cemetery. The deceased is survived by her husband, her mother, five sisters and three brothers.
Mrs. Grauer first felt the pains of illness in March of Last year, and although she immediately sought and received the best of family and professional care, her condition failed to show any signs of relief. Last fall she resorted to an operation to no avail, and it was discovered that she was suffering from several internal maladies, of which tuberculosis soon developed into the major one, and she steadily declined in spite of all the medical help and the constant care of her relatives, could accomplish. She suffered considerably for several months past, especially during the past six weeks during which time she was constantly confined to the sick room.
Mrs. Fred Grauer, formerly Miss Madia Moritz, was a daughter of Ms. Maria Moritz, of Remsen, and was born on a farm in Meadow township, seven miles north of Remsen, on April 8, 1895. The family continued to reside there until 1907, when Mrs. Moritz, together with several of her children, moved to town. The father passed away in 1902. On June 14, 1916, Madia was united in marriage, in Remsen, to Mr. Fred Grauer of Cherokee county, and since then the couple has been living on Mr. Grauer’s farm seven miles south of Marcus. A peculiar and sad circumstance connected with her death is that her funeral was held on her wedding anniversary.
The deceased was a kind, loving wife, daughter and sister, and the bereaved family has the sincerest sympathy of the many friends in Remsen and Marcus. She bore up bravely under trying conditions connected with her illness, and held out hopes for recovery to the last. She was a life long member of Christ Lutheran church of Remsen, and throughout her life she tried to live up to the teachings she received in her early religious training.
She is survived by her husband, her mother, and the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Etta Harnack, Mrs. Theodore Spiecker, Mrs. Geo. L. Meyer and George, John and David Moritz, all of Remsen; Mrs. Phil Raveling, of Lucan, Minn., and Mrs. Anton Ufken, of Marshall, Minn.
The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon, June 14, with brief services at the home in Cherokee county, followed by services in Christ Lutheran church in Remsen. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. I. C. Ilten, of Amherst township, and choir music was supplied by the choirs of both the Amherst township and Christ Lutheran churches. The services were very largely attended. – Remsen Bell-Enterprise, June 15, 1922, page1, column 3

Note: Madie’s mother was Marie Moritz. Fred Grauer was a son of Christina Grauer. Madie and Fred were married in 1916 in Christ Lutheran Church, Remsen, Iowa. Madie is buried in the Remsen City Cemetery.
