John H. Rathmann, one of the pioneer residents of Remsen passed away after a suffering of eleven months from lung trouble, at 10 p.m. May 6. Decedent was born in the district Dittmarschen, Holstein, Germany, June 7, 1850. When 19 years old he came to this country and located at Davenport. Here he met and learned to love Burgadine Bein who became his wife in 1873. Later they made their home in Belle Plaine until the year 1880 when they moved to Remsen. Mr. Rathmann at once took great interests in the welfare of the little village and was ever prepared to make sacrifices when the interests of the place demanded it. He leaves a widow and six children. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Paul Brammer of Christ church, Wednesday afternoon and the attendance was large. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, May 15, 1906, page 2.
