Death of Remsen Pioneer. Remsen Bell-Enterprise: Mrs. Burgadena Rathmann, a resident of Remsen for 42 years, passed away at her home last Thursday night at the age of 69 years, following a severe illness of two weeks with rheumatism and nerve trouble. The funeral was held Monday afternoon with services in Christ Lutheran church and the body was laid to rest in the Remsen cemetery.
Burgadena Bein Rathmann was born in Davenport, Iowa, October 27, 1853, and grew to young womanhood there, remaining with her parents until her marriage with John Henry Rathmann, also a native of that city, which took place in Davenport in May, 1872.
Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Rathmann moved to Belle Plaine where Mr. Rathmann worked for some time as clerk in a store operated by the late Samuel Wentz. They came to Remsen in 1881, farming east of town for several years, after which they moved into town, and for a few years Mr. Rathmann conducted an implement establishment. Later they spent three years in Le Mars, returning to Remsen in 1893, and Mrs. Rathmann has resided continuously here ever since. Her husband passed away in 1906.
To their union ten children were born, six of whom are living. They are: Mrs. H. Kruse of Portland, Oregon; Mrs. W. Schultz of Doone, Ia.; Mrs. H. Johnson, Correctionville, Ia.; John, Albers and Louis of Remsen. Deceased is also survived by four sisters, Mrs. Ida Mangels, Mrs. Ellen Westphal, Mrs. Lucy Schernor and Mrs. Fanny Schuett, all residing in Davenport. – Le Mars Globe-Post, May 31, 1923, page 1.
