MANCHESTER -- Gladys (Fischer) Bowers, 80, of Manchester, died Saturday morning, June 19, 2004, at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester, following a sudden illness.
She was born April 16, 1924, at her parents' farm home near Le Mars, the daughter of Theodore and Rose (Seiler) Fischer. She attended the local schools and graduated from Le Mars High School. She attended Western Union (Westmar) College in Le Mars.
She taught in the rural schools of Plymouth County, and later taught in West Delaware and Maquoketa Valley Schools. Gladys was a substitute teacher for 20 years.
She was united in marriage to Wilfred L. Bowers on July 24, 1947, at Le Mars. They lived in western Iowa and in New Mexico, where they were missionaries at McCurdy Schools. They lived in the Manchester area since 1966. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Mi-Ads and UMW.
Survivors include her husband of almost 57 years, Wilfred; two sons, James (Bev) Bowers of Phoenix, Ariz., and Douglas (Rose) Bowers of Dubuque; three daughters, Janice (Harold) England of Cedar Rapids, Debra (Tobe) Werner of Manchester, and Paula (Charles) Franks of Ely; 13 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; a brother, Donald Fischer of Le Mars, and a sister, Marion Gaumnitz of Lee's Summit, Mo.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Arlene Baker.
