Mrs. Mary Schmitz, 91, Remsen, died Sunday night (Feb. 25, 1973) at Happy Siesta Retirement home at Remsen after an illness of two weeks.
She had been in failing health the last year and a half and had resided during that time at the retirement home.
Funeral services will be Thursday, March 1, at the Christ Lutheran church, Remsen, at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Walter Kurth officiating.
Boral will be in the Remsen city cemetery under direction of the Moeller funeral home at Remsen. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Pallbearers will be Albert Schmitz, Cliff Rowenhorst, Gary Schmitz, Jim Staab, Claire Pritchett, Keith Pritchett.
The former Mary Letsche, she was born July 5, 1881, in Germany, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Herman Letsche.
She came to the United States with her parents at the age of 14 in 1885. She settled in the Remsen area.
She married Louis William Schmitz Feb. 25, 1902, at Remsen. The couple farmed near Remsen until Mr. Schmitz died in 1928. That fall Mrs. Schmitz moved into Remsen where she since has resided.
Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Elsa) Prichett of Elkton, S.D., and Mrs. Clarence (Rose Maria) Keffler of Remsen; a son Earl Schmitz of Ontario, Calif., 21 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1928, three sons, Albert, Andrew and Louis who died at the age of 2 ½ years and four brothers. – Le Mars Daily Sentinel, Feb. 27, 1973, page 10.
