Peter Raveling, 88, among Remsen’s oldest residents, passed away in his home Wednesday night in Remsen after many weeks of sickness.
Exceptionally active despite his advanced age he nevertheless kept mostly to his home during the past year and as his feeble condition became burdensome he enjoyed the constant ministrations of his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Raveling.
During the past eight weeks he was confined to his bed almost constantly. His death, due principally to complications arising from age, came at 9:30 o’clock Wednesday night.
Peter Raveling was born November 10, 1862, in Förlitz, Blankirchsen, Ostriesland, Germany, the son of Henry and Sieve Raveling who brought their family to this country and directly to Remsen in 1882.The death of this well known and esteemed Remsen man leaves but one survivor, William Raveling of Lambzerton, Minn., in a family of 12 children.
In 1886 Mr. Raveling married Clara Vryse, who was a native of the same village in Germany, and to this union seven children were born, all of them living. The children are Henry of Sioux City, George of Remsen, Mrs. Sieve Willardson of Cherokee, Mrs. Mary Wulf of Bronson, Jake of Remsen, Mrs. Hilka Reiners of Harris and Mrs. John (Clara) Schmidt of Remsen.
The mother passed away in February 1899.
In 1905, Mr. Raveling married Alvena Steffen. To this union two children were born, both passing away in infancy. Mrs. Raveling died in December, 1939.
After farming here for many years, Mr. and Mrs. Raveling retired to town in 1917.
Mr. Raveling was a lifelong member of the Evangelical Lutheran church by baptism as a child in his native land, and during his active years was a member of St. Paul’s congregation here.
He was a man of strong Christian character, a devoted father and friend and his passing is regretted by many acquaintances as it is a source of sorrow to the bereaved family.
The body is at the Moeller funeral home. Services were held Saturday afternoon, at 1:30 o’clock at the funeral home followed by church service at St. Paul’s at 2 o’clock, with Rev. Paul Wuebben conducting. Interment was in the Remsen cemetery. – Le Mars Globe-Post, Feb. 25, 1952, page 11.
