Word was received yesterday in Le Mars of the death of Mrs. Eric Scott, wife of Eric Scott, one of the leading business men of Remsen, which occurred at her home on Monday morning. She has been ill for some time and recently underwent two operations at short intervals for relief from cancer. She was a native of Denmark, where she was born in 1857. She leaves beside the bereaved husband six children and a large number of relatives, who reside in the east part of this county. The funeral will probably be held on Wednesday, although arrangements have not been completed. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Tuesday, May 4, 1909, page 1.

The dread disease of cancer claimed another victim when Mrs. Eric [Erick] Scott passed away at her home in this town Monday forenoon at 11 o’clock [May 10, 1909]. Her demise is very sad in that she leaves her husband and six children, four of them very small, to mourn the loss of a loving mother. Mrs. Scott was one of those women who make the best of conditions in life, every cheerful and contented and working to make an ideal home for her family. She was the friend of all who knew her and her presence will be sadly missed in this community.
Marie Petersen was born in Vonsbak, Denmark, October 13, 1857. She came to this country in 1879, locating in Bay City, Michigan. One year later she came to Plymouth county. On March 11, 1881, she was married to Eric Scott, who survives to mourn her untimely demise. To the union nine children were born, six of whom are living as follows: Andrew of Paullina, Elma, Eda, Maud, Arthur and George, all at home. She had lived with her family in this neighborhood with the exception of one year when she lived in Albert Lea, Minn., and three years in Forest City, this state.
