Death came Wednesday to relieve Hans Rolfs, one of Remsen’s oldest inhabitants, of a period of illness which he suffered considerable for the past five years. Hans Rolfs was born on a farm near the little village of Tetenhusen, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, on May 5, 1832, and spent the first fifty-five years of life in that country, constantly following the occupation of a farmer. At his native home he was united in marriage in 1856 to Anna Wiek [Wieck?], also of that place, and the couple together with their children, came to the United States in the fall of 1887. Upon arriving in this country they settled at once on a farm eight miles south of Remsen and their home has been in this community ever since. Mr. and Mrs. Rolfs remained on the farm, which they owned, for nine years, then retired and have made their home in Remsen since twenty-three years ago. The deceased suffered a paralytic stroke five years ago and since then has been an invalid. His wife, who preceded him in death eight years ago, was similarly stricken, and their granddaughter, Miss Anna Borm, attended both the aged people during their longer periods of illness and helplessness, administering the best care as well as all the comforts available. To the union of Mr. and Mrs. Rolfs five children were born. One of them, a daughter, died in early childhood, and the four living members of the family are: Mrs. Claus Borm, Mrs. Claus Schutt and Mrs. Margaretha Thomsen, of Remsen, and Carsten Rolfs, of Yankton, S.D. The funeral was held on Saturday afternoon at St. Paul’s church, Rev E.H. Eilers officiating. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Feb. 4, 1919, page 2.
