Merrill, Iowa -- Gordon Ross Brodie, 73, of Merrill died Tuesday, Jan. 19,
1993, at Floyd Valley hospital in LeMars.

A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Presbyterian United
Church of Christ in LeMars with the Rev. Robert Grupp officiating. Burial
will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Plymouth Presbyterian, Crathorne Cemetery,
rural LeMars. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family
present 7-8 p.m., at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars.

Mr. Brodie was born July 18, 1919, in Merrill, the son of Charles and Eva
(King) Brodie. He was raised on a farm near Merrill and graduated from
Merrill High school in 1938. In 1942, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and
attended officers training school in Fort Knox, Ky., where he was
commissioned a second lieutenant. He was assigned to the 70th tank
battalion, the first activated by the Army during World War II., and
participated in invasions of North Africa, Sicily and Normandy. He was
awarded three bronze stars, a purple heart, four silver stars, a
presidential citation and the French Croix de guerre. He met Margaret
Elizabeth "Bettie" Gearhart in Germany and they were married Oct. 27, 1945,
in Burlingame, Calif. The couple resided on the family farm near Merrill.
He finished his 34 years of military service as an Army Reservist in Sioux
City. He also served 20 years with the U.S. Civil Service at the U.S. Army
Reserve Center in Sioux City.

Mr. Brodie was an active member of the Merrill American Legion, having
served as County Commander. He was a member of the Merrill/LeMars School
Board for 16 years. He had been an active member and elder of the
Presbyterian United Church of Christ in LeMars. He was a member of the
Merrill Lions Club. He was a lifelong Merrill area farmer.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Tom Brodie and his wife Fran of
Indianapolis, Ind.; three daughters and their husbands, Barb Gearke and
Larry and Ann Failing and Krieg, all of Denver, Colo., and Meg Brodie-Ideker
and John of Saginaw, Mich.; a sister, Margaret Willis of Lake City; and
seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter; and a
brother-in-law, B.L.Willis.
