WILLIAM MOHNING BURIED WEDNESDAY. Prominent Marion Township Farmer Dies After Lingering Sickness.

Remsen Bell-Enterprise: The community was saddened last Monday when news was spread of the death of William J. Mohning, prominent Marion township farmer, who passed away at the family home, southwest of town at noon.

Mr. Mohning had been in failing health for a year, the cause of death being an internal cancer. He was 51 years old, a native of this county, and is survived by his widow, three children, one sister and one brother. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon.

Mr. Mohning had been in poor health for a little more than a year, and most of the time was unable to take a very active part in his farming operations. Since last October he has been confined to his room constantly. Previous to that time he went to many places for cures and to try and obtain relief. He was a very patient sufferer and was always happy and cheerful—and wanted to live for his family. He passed away peacefully at his home at noon Monday, surrounded by the immediate members of his family.

William John Mohning was born January 28, 1881, on a farm in Marion township, and lived in that vicinity all his life. He received his education in the rural schools and remained at home to assist with the farm work until his marriage, in 1907, to Rosa Burns [Bruns]. The couple settled on a farm near the old Mohning homestead and have been residents of this community continuously ever since. Mr. Mohning took a keen interest in local affairs and was considered one of the substantial and highly respected farmers and citizens. He was an obliging and trustworthy neighbor and staunch friend to a great number of acquaintances, and a devoted husband and father. His admirable qualities of character and his pleasing manner at all times endeared him to the many people with whom he came in contact, and the friends of the family extend their sincere sympathy to those who are left to mourn most intensely his early departure from this life. Mr. Mohning was a staunch member of St. Paul’s Evangelical congregation here, and always took a leading part and showed great interest in the affairs of that congregation.

Surviving him, besides his sorrowing widow, are three children, Mrs. Carl Kohler, of Fredonia township and Stanley and Donald at home, and one granddaughter, Carol Maxine Kohler. There is one sister, Mary, who has been making her home with her brother and family and who assisted in caring for him in his long sickness. His stepmother, Mrs. Henry Mohning resides at Remsen. His brother Louis, resides on a farm in the neighborhood. Two sisters and one brother also preceded him in death. They were Mrs. Charles Meyer, Mrs. Ann Wiebke and Herman Mohning. The deceased man’s mother died 19 years ago and his father passed away last year.

Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon and were conducted by the Rev. Hugo Welchelt, pastor of St. Paul’s church. Services at the home were at 1 o’clock and were followed immediately by church services and burial in the Remsen cemetery. Pall bearers were: C.J. Peters, Walter Lang, Charles F. Lang, Henry Reinholdt, Otto H. Kohnke and Richard A. Meyer. A large concourse of friends attended the services and followed the body of this esteemed gentleman to its last resting place.

Out of town relatives present at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Kregel, of Garnavillo, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kaiser and Mahala Bruns, of Monona, Iowa; Albert Meyer, Mrs. Charley Bonker, Mrs. Charley Dahl, all of Manly, Iowa; August Schulte and Mrs. Amanda Wiebke, of Sterling, Nebraska; Lester and Foster Mohning of Clayton, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Charley Martin, Charles Harnack of Garretson, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schmillen, Mr. and Mrs Will Schmillen of Marcus, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Will Jorgenson, Luverne, Minn.; Mr and Mrs. John Bekmann of Alton, Iowa. – Le Mars Globe-Post, Feb. 29, 1932, pages 1 and 3
