Akron, Iowa -- Joseph P. Johnson, 74, of Akron died Friday (Jan. 19, 1979) of an apparent heart attack while enroute from the Akron hospital to the Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Wesley United Methodist church. The Rev. Dwight Bonham will officiate. Burial will be in Plymouth Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Akron. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. today in the Schroeder Funeral Home. Masonic services will follow the prayer service.
Mr. Johnson was born Feb. 6, 1904, at Akron. He married Gladys Harris June 4, 1925, at Sioux City. The couple farmed in the Akron area until 1969 when they retired and moved to Akron.
Mr. Johnson was a past master of Freedom Lodge 434 at Akron, a past worthy patron of Order of Eastern Star, Vesper Chapter 61 at Akron and a member of the Sioux City Consistory.
Survivors include the widow; three daughters, Mrs. Ray (Ramona) Weenink of Akron, Mrs. Darius (Elizabeth) Oliphant of Toddville and Mrs Ed (Marian) Mitchell of Alton; four sisters, Mrs. Tom (Ruth) Kenny and Mrs. David (Mary) Chrissey, both of Stinton, Texas, Mrs. Katherine Tsitouras of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. William (Irene) Phillips of Akron; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Memorials to the American Diabetes Foundation have been established in Mr. Johnson's name.
