Kingsley, Iowa – Duane E. Ward, 75, of Kingsley, Iowa, passed away on Sunday morning, March 6, 2011, at his residence in Kingsley.

Graveside Memorial Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2011, at the Kingsley Cemetery, Kingsley, Iowa. Military respects will be provided by the Nash American Legion Post #140 of Kingsley.

Duane Eugene Ward was born on September 18, 1935, in Kingsley, Iowa, the son of Clara Alvina (Zimmerman) and Homer Elmer Ward. He attended school in Kingsley, and with the exception of time spent in the military, has resided in his original family home, all his life. Duane served his country in the United States Army from June 4, 1958 to June 3, 1964. He was honorably discharged from his military duties and returned to Kingsley.

Duane has always had a passion for keeping himself busy with fixing items and tinkering projects in his yard, home and garage. He was employed as a construction worker and welder for area companies. Prior to retirement, Duane worked for the North American Manufacturing Company (NAMCO) in Lawton, Iowa.

Duane was a member of the Nash American Legion Post #140 of Kingsley. He enjoyed fishing, his companionship with his dog, Matty, and going uptown for his morning coffee and conversations with his friends, until his health no longer allowed him to do so. Duane is described as a man who would “give the shirt off his back,” and he always made himself available to assist anyone he could, in any way.

Duane is survived by his two special caregivers (nephews), Todd Quade and Eric (Leanne) Quade of Kingsley; his brother, Charles Ward of Fruita, CO; his three sisters, Charlene Nuzum of Sioux City, Janice (Myron) Wimmer of Kingsley, and Mary Kay Koch of Sioux City; his close friend, Duane Kramer of Kingsley; and numerous other nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Preceding Duane in death is his parents, Homer and Clara Ward; his brother, Gary Ward; his two sisters, Dixie Richardson and Shirley Hawkinson; his niece, Shannon Koch; and his nephew, Radon Hawkinson. The Johnson-Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley has been entrusted with assisting Duane’s family with his funeral arrangements.
