Chester “Chet” Lahrs, 89, of Le Mars, Iowa formerly of Merrill, Iowa passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Reverend Tim Geitz will officiate. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 25, 2011 with the family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church.

Pallbearers will be Chad LaBahn, Chad Henning, Shawn Burress, Ryan Lahrs, Don Stusse, and Don Schneider.

Chester Lavern Lahrs was born March 7, 1922 on the family farm near Lawton, Iowa to Fred and Anna (Hanson) Lahrs. Chet attended country school near his home and graduated from Lawton High School in 1939. Chet was united in marriage to Mildred L. Bogenrief on August 16, 1944 at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton, Iowa. Chet served his country in the United States Army Air Corp from February 1946 until his honorable discharge in August of 1947. Chet farmed and raised livestock south of Merrill until he retired in the mid 1990’s. He also drove school bus for the Hinton School District for nearly 30 years. Chet and Mildred continued to live on the farm until 2006 when they moved to Le Mars. Mildred passed away on September 12, 2010.

Chet enjoyed going to Hinton for coffee and visiting with friends. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He and Mildred had been longtime members of Calvary Lutheran Church in Leeds and when they moved to Le Mars enjoyed being a member of Grace Lutheran Church.

Survivors two children, Bruce Lahrs and his wife Diana of Merrill, Iowa and Sandy LaBahn and her husband Rod of Le Mars; 4 grandchildren: Jennifer Burress and her husband Shawn, Ryan Lahrs and his wife Gwendy, Chad LaBahn and his wife Tiffany, and Megan Henning and her husband Chad; 8 great grandchildren; brother, Dale Lahrs and his wife Wilma of Louisville, TN; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Anna (Hanson) Lahrs; his wife Mildred; 2 brothers, Vernon and Wilfred Lahrs; and a sister, Inez Anderson.
