Lowell William Barinsky was born September 19, 1921 on a farm in Johnson Township, Plymouth County, Iowa, the son of William and Anna (Hillrichs) Barinsky. Lowell was baptized at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Brunsville and later confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, Preston Township, rural Akron. Lowell attended Haage Country School and one year of high school in Akron until he began helping his father on the farm. Later on in life, in his 50’s, Lowell returned to school and received his G.E.D.
Lowell was united in marriage to Norine Carrell on September 9, 1961 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Elk Point. Early on, they lived in Riverside in Sioux City. Lowell was farming near Akron. In 1965, they moved to the family farm northeast of Akron. They continued living there until moving to a homestead south of Akron. During that time, Lowell went to work for Barwick Implement in Akron. Later on, Lowell began working for American Popcorn Company in Sioux City. In 1978, they moved to Akron. Lowell retired from American Popcorn Company after 25 years of service.
Lowell was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron. In his earlier years, he and Norine enjoyed square dancing. They were members of the “Dudes and Dolls” Square Dancing club in Elk Point for many years. One of Lowell’s favorite past times was watching baseball and football, both locally and nationally. He followed the Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs. Lowell enjoyed collecting different meal recipes and going fishing. But most of all, he loved the times spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, who affectionately referred to him as “Papa”. He will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife of over 49 years, Norine of Akron; his two daughters: Brenda Puckett (Mike) of Murfreesboro, TN and their children, Kristen and Emily; and Carol Barinsky of Akron; a brother: Raymond Barinsky (Frances) of Branson, MO; two sisters: Lorraine Hamilton (Wayne) of Alcester, SD, and Eileen Onken (Lennis) of Sioux City, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
