Grant E. Gassman
Grant Gassman departed this life last Saturday afternoon, January 24, 1976, at the St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa, following a brief illness. He was 76 years of age.
Grant Emmanuel Gassman was born in Sioux Valley Township, Union county, South Dakota, September 30,1899. His parents were Henning and Hannah Gassman. As an infant he was baptized into the Christian faith at Union Creek Church October 17, 1889. On May 23, 1915, he-became a communicant member by the rite of confirmation. Pastor Emil Johnson was his confirmation pastor.
At a wedding in the Union Creek Nathanael parsonage in Alcester, South Dakota, on July 3,1928, he was united in marriage to Miss Oma Ogden. Pastor David J. Edward officiated. They made their home in Akron and had lived all their married lives in Akron.
Mr. Gassman was a member of Union Creek church during childhood and youth. After moving to Akron he with his wife became members of Immanuel Lutheran and he was actively that at the time of this death. He served in any way he could particularly on the church council of his church. He operated the Gassman Motor Company here in Akron froml 933 until his retirement in 1970. As an active, member of the Akron Commercial Club, he served as its president for a number of years. He served a number of years on the Akron Town Council and in addition was Mayor of Akron for 8 years during the 1950s. His service included membership of the Akron board of education. Mr. Gassman loved his family, his church and his community and showed this love in so many and various ways. This attracted to him a host of friends who recognized that never did he do or give anyting to attract attention or notice. He only wanted to help.
Among those who survive him are: his wife, Oma Gassman; his son, Clark Gassman of Woodland Hills, California; his two granddaughters, Jill and Kara Gassman of Woodland Hills, California; his sister, Mrs. MargaretStoutenburg of Akron; his brother, Marvin Gassman of Dallas, Texas; other relatives and many, many friends.
The funeral service in his memory was held in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron, Tuesday afternoon of this week, with Pastor David J. Roy, officiating. Mrs. Nancy Reoh was vocalist and sang "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" accompanied by Mrs. Carol Harris, organist. The congregation sang "What a Friend We Have In Jesus." Parnell (Charley) Boetger. Jerry Eilers, Lyle Jacobs, Rodney Reoh, Rev.",' Wayne Stoutenburg and Ed- H. Wilier served as casket bearers. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery.
