Fred C. Woolworth, 72, 515 W. Clifton avenue, boy scout executive and in recent years director of activities for children at the Wall Street Mission, died Friday at a hospital after a 30-day illness.
Mr. Woolworth served as boy scout executive here for 30 years, from 1917-1947, and promoted the establishment of Camp Kellogg, the boy scout camp at Stone Park.
He was born August 13, 1882, in Sioux City, but moved to LeMars, Ia., with his parents as a child where he attended elementary and high school. He also attended Western Union now Westmar College, at LeMars.
He married Agnice Searing in 1904 in Sioux City. He worked for the old Sioux City Gas and Electric Co. for several years before organizing the Sioux City area council of the Boy Scouts of America in 1917.
That organization was supplanted by the Sgt. Floyd area council in 1926.
After retiring as a scout executive in 1947, he became associated with the Wall Street Mission as director of activities for children, a position he held for five years.
Mr. Woolworth was a member of the First Methodist church, the Rotary Club, and the Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include the widow; two sons, Kenneth D., of Sioux City and Jack B., serving with the Navy in Hawaii; two daughters, Mrs. Leo Renyer of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Robert Gessell of Sioux City; two sisters, Mrs. Joyce Cooper, of Muscatine, Ia., and Mrs. Lulu Crosby of Cherokee, Ia.; and six grandchildren.
The body was taken to the Heaton-Westcott funeral home.
