R. J. Koehler
R. J. Koehler, 83, president of the First National bank of Le Mars and a resident here more than 80 years, died Friday afternoon. July 11, 1958, at the Sacred Heart hospital after a sickness of a year.
Mr. Koehler, one of the best known persons in Plymouth county, also was secretary of the Le Mars Mutual Insurance Co. and had been active in insurance and banking affairs until he was hospitalized about a year ago.
He was born August 11, 1874 at Galena, Illinois, and came to Le Mars with his parents when he was 2 years old. He had lived here since that time. Mr. Koehler married Wilhelmina A. Reichmann October 5, 1898 at Le Mars.
Mr. Koehler was prominent in civic, educational, cultural and fraternal affairs.
He was a past exalted ruler and a charter member of the Le Mars Elks club, a past president and charter member of the Rotary club here, secretary of the Le Mars board of education for many years.
Mr. Koehler served as Plymouth county Red Cross chairman several years and was a member of the board of trustees of Westmar college at the time of his death. He donated a large sum of money to build Koehler hall at Westmar.
Survivors include the widow; a daughter, Mrs. Milton H. Tappan of Sioux City and a grand daughter, Kathryn Tappan. Two sisters and eight brothers preceded him in death.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday at the Wiltgen-Luedke funeral home here. Rev. G. O. Thompson officiated and burial was in the Le Mars City cemetery.
