August Krekow Dies - from Remsen Bell-Enterprise. August Krekow, a resident of Remsen for 15 years, and a resident of Cherokee county for nearly 40 years, passed away early last Thursday at his home south of Marcus, at the age of 84 years, after a lingering illness with kidney trouble. He had been troubled for a number of years, but was always able to be up and about until six weeks ago. The end came at 6:30 o'clock Thursday morning, after the entire family had been called to his bedside.
The funeral was held a week ago Sunday afternoon, with a very large attendance. Services were in Trinity Lutheran church in Amhearst township, Cherokee county, and interment in the cemetery at that place.
August Wilhelm Krekow was born Feb. 22, 1842 at Pommern, Nassan, Heide, Germany, but remained in his native land until he reached the age of 30 years. He then came to the United States to seek his fortune and settled in Chicago, where he worked in the lumber business for a period of five years. After that he came to Cherokee county, and located on a farm eight miles south of Marcus, which he later purchased and which he owned at the time of his death. Here he lived for many years, but in 1909 the family retired and came to Remsen. They purchased a home here and spent 15 years as residents of Remsen, but again moved to the old home farm in 1918. Mr. Krekow was one of the early settlers of Cherokee county, and was considered to one of the substantial citizens of that vicinity.
The deceased is survived by his widow, eight sons and one daughter, who are: Herbert, Theodore, Edwin, Paul, August, Herta, Arnold and Martin, all making their home on the farm south of Marcus, and Waldemar, who is an instructor in a college at Ellensburg, Washington. Besides, there is one brother, Charles Krekow, living in Remsen and two sisters, Mrs. Ernestine Grauer of Marcus and Mrs. Mary Denhardt of Blue Island, Ill.
The funeral took place Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock with services at the Krekow home and at Trinity Lutheran church south of Marcus, conducted by the Rev. A. C. Ilten. Interment was in the Trinity Lutheran cemetery. The pall bearers were: A. Grauer, John Dorr, Phili Dorr, Herman Nitzschke and Martin Letsche. Those acting as flower girls were: Misses Alma, Marie and Dora Krekow, Aarel Baumann, Leona Brandt, Roma Schmidt, Lealdra Olson and Alma Luchterhandt.
