James A. McDougall, one of the well known and highly respected pioneer citizens of Plymouth county, passed away at his residence in LeMars on Friday evening, July 7. Mr. McDougall had been In failing health for the past two years.

James McDougall was born In Mineral Point, Wis., on October 30, 1848, being a son of James and Adeline McDougall. He received his early education in the schools In Wisconsin. On
reaching manhood he worked in the lead mines and assisted his father on the farm. In 1870 he came with his father to Iowa. They made the trip across the state with horses and wagons. The Journey covering a period of thirteen days and being fraught with hazard and adventure. There was only one log cabin between Cherokee and Le Mars in those days.

On Mr. McDougall's arrival In Plymouth county he preempted 160 acres of land in Grant township, and his holdings were since increased to 240 acres. His first residence was a cabin
twelve by twelve feet, in which he lived for some years. Since that time he expended many thousand dollars in substantial improvements and converted the place into one of the most beautiful farms in Plymouth county. He resided on the place over fifty years, coming to Le Mars two years [ago]. His son John McDougall, now resides on the home farm.

In 1881, James McDougall was united in marriage to Martha Warren, in Le Mars. To this union were born nine children. Two girls died in infancy. One daughter, Mrs. Laura Edwards, died eight years ago. Those left to mourn are his sorrowing wife, his children, Edward McDougall, of Westfield; Mrs. Frank Glaser, of Le Mars; Mrs. Pearl Earkl, of Sioux City; Mary and Chester McDougall, of Le Mars; John McDougall of Struble, all being at his bedside when he passed away. He also leaves eight grandchildren. He is survived by two brothers Alexander McDougall of Le Mars; and John McDougall, of Ogden, Utah, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Edwards, of Ireton besides a host of friends and acquaintances.

The funeral was held at two o'clock from the home residence at North Main street Monday afternoon and services were held at the First Methodist church, Rev. C. H. Seward, the
pastor, officiating. The body was laid to rest in the city cemetery. The pallbearers were E. A. Dalton, M. A. Cass, F. K. Veale, A. M. Duus, John Bogen and John Edwards.
