Died at his home in Quorn, July 22, D.S. [Dolphus] Rathbun, of heart failure. Mr. Rathbun was born in the town of Eagle, Allegheny Co,, N.Y., in November 1833, being in his 65th year. When a mere child he came west to Illinois with his parents and in 1854 the family finally settled in Winneshiek county.

At the breaking out of the Rebellion he enlisted in Bo. B. Fifth Minnesota volunteer infantry at Fort Snelling and went forth to battle for his country. He participated in the battle of Nashville which was fought under General Thomas, December 16, 1864. In this he was wounded in the right arm which had to be amputated and he has worn an empty sleeve the balance of his life time. After the war he married Isa Everitt and in 1869 camhe came to Plynouth county to seek a home, but it was not until 1870 that he made a permanent settlement with his family on a homestead in Union township, consequently he was among the early settlers of the county and passing through all the hardships incident to pioneer life, which has to be experienced to be fully realized. In 1882 he moved to Quorn, where he has since resided. Mr. Rathbun was a man of large acquaintance in this and adjoining counties and was universally loved and respected wherever known, as no man had a kinder heart nor was more upright and honorable in all his dealings and his familiar figure will be missed, not only by his immediate friends, but by all.

He leaves a wife and one son, an adopted son, Wesley, and two brothers, one of whom B. W. Rathbun of Winneshiek county, came to see him in his last hours.

The funeral took place in LeMars on Sunday, July 21 and his earthly remains were laid at rest beside that of his daughter, Annie, in the LeMars cemetery, she having died about three years ago.

Thus has passed one of our oldest residents. The family and friends may feel assured of the sympathy of a large circle of friends.
