J. W. Randall was one of the pioneer residents of Kingsley

J. W. [Joseph] Randall, one of the oldest residents of Kingsley, and a pioneer of Plymouth county, died Thursday, February 7, after an illness of three years at the age of 85 years.
J. W. Randall located in Kingsley when the town was started and was engaged in business for many years and also served in the capacity of justice of the peace. J.W. Randall was born at Cockranton, Crawford county, Pennsylvania, August 7, 1838. When a child his parents moved to Cumberland, Ohio, and he received his schooling in that city, growing up and assisting his father in the management of a hotel. October 4, 1860, J.W. Randall was united in marriage to Sarah C. Kennard. Eight children were born to their union, Sarah Lydia, who married W. H. Hackenthorn, Mrs. A. Park, Walter of Dickinson, N.D., Mrs. E.D. Kent, George of Vermillion, S.D., Mrs. O.C. Moore, Deuel county, South Dakota, Joseph and William of Staples, Minn.

October 1861, J.W. Randall enlisted for service during the civil war as a private in Company A, Seventy-third regiment, Ohio volunteer infantry, and served in that command until it was mustered out July 26, 1865. The regiment saw service in General Sherman’s army and participated in the campaign of the army through…(unreadable line). Mr. Randall was with his regiment in the grand review of the army in Washington at the close of the war. After the war Mr. Randall farmed for three years in Cole county, Illinois at the end of which time he came west and homesteaded in Dakota territory in the vicinity of Yankton where he developed land and lived for several years and then moved to Kingsley where he engaged in the grocery business. He retired from business several years ago. Mr. Randall was a republican in politics and served at various times as justice of the peace, township assessor and constable. He was a member of the Odd Fellows organization. Mr.Randall was a life long member of the Methodist church
