Will Spies, Merrill retired farmer, dead at 86

Will C. Spies, 86, Merrill, died Monday (April 30,1973) at his home in Merrill after an extended illness. He was a retired farmer. Mr. and Mrs. Spies had recently observed their golden wedding anniversary.

He was born June 30, 1886, in Plymouth Township. He had farmed near Merrill and moved into Merrill 12 years ago. He was the son of Reuben and Dora Sternburg Spies.

His first wife, Blanch Greene, died in 1920. His marriage to Lenore Rush took place April 25,1923, at Sioux City.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Hinton United Methodist Church in Hinton. Rev. Waiden J . Paige will officiate and burial will be in Floyd Valley Melbourne Cemetery in Merrill under direction of the Luken-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Survivors are his wife Lenore, Merrill; two sons, Gordon of Pamona, Calif., and Wayne of Hinton; and three daughters, Mrs. Vernon (Mildred) Farmer, Brunsville; Mrs. Floyd (Norma) Hartman, Merrill, and Mrs. Don (Ardyce) Arndt, Hinton. Also surviving are two brothers, Milton R. of Hinton and Fred G. of Sioux City; a sister, Mrs. Oscar (Esther) Schindel, Hinton; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, a grandson and his first wife.

Mr. Spies was a member of the Hinton United Methodist Church.
