(April 22, 1912 - October 8, 2010)

Kingsley, Iowa – Thelma R. Schweitzberger, 98, of Kingsley, Iowa, passed away early Friday morning, October 8, 2010, at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 12, 2010, at the United Methodist Church in Kingsley with the Rev. Roger Kurtenbach and the Rev. Magrey deVega officiating. Interment will be in the Kingsley Cemetery. The visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 11, 2010, at the Johnson-Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley. The family will be present from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 p.m. The visitation will continue at the United Methodist Church on Tuesday, one hour prior to Thelma’s service.

Thelma Ruth Schweitzberger, the daughter of Effie Maude (Mitchell) and Nye Albert McConnell, was born at on April 22, 1912 in Botna, Iowa. She enjoyed playing basketball during her high school years and graduated from Union High School in 1929. On January 18, 1933, Thelma was united in marriage to Ernest James Schweitzberger in Elk Point, SD. They became the proud parents of two daughters. Thelma farmed along side her husband in the Pierson, Hinton and Kingsley areas prior to their retirement in 1976.

Thelma was devoted to her faith and was a member of the Kingsley United Methodist Church. Some of her other interests and hobbies included crocheting, sewing, baking (especially known for her homemade pies), cooking, playing cards, assisting with church activities, playing bingo and other games of chance, and tending to her house plants and flower gardens. In her earlier years, she delighted in attending her grandchildren’s activities and hosting holiday gatherings in her home. Thelma’s positive attitude and beautiful smile will lovingly be remembered by all who have shared in her life.

Thelma is survived by her two daughters, Junille (Larry) Knaack of Correctionville, IA and Joyce Kohn of Cherokee, IA; her grandchildren, Roberta Knaack, Terry (Jackie) Knaack, Joel Kohn (Cindy Greeley), Jason (Sara) Kohn, Jeff (Angie) Kohn, Aaron (Aimee) Kohn, John (Jodi) Kohn, Sherry (Jr.) Miller, and Gena Kohn (Jared Leonard); her 13 great-grandchildren; her special friend, Elaine Todd of Kingsley; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Preceding Thelma in death is her husband Ernest in April of 2005; her parents, Nye and Effie McConnell; her three sisters, Alice Sievertson, Opal Hodge and Erma Carver; and her two brothers, Kenneth and Marion McConnell.
