Marcus, Iowa – Paul James Flanagan, 101, of Marcus, Iowa passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2009, at Heartland Care Center in Marcus, Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus, Iowa. Father Eugene Murray will officiate. Burial will follow in the Holy Name Catholic Cemetery, Marcus, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Earnest – Johnson Funeral Home in Marcus, with the family present at 6:00. The rosary will be recited at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday followed by a Scriptural Prayer service beginning at 7:00 p.m. The visitation will resume at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Holy Name Catholic Church.

Paul James Flanagan was born on January 25, 1908 in Marcus, Iowa, to James J. and Anna (Wardle) Flanagan. He attended rural school near home and later Holy Name School in Marcus. Paul assisted his family with their farming operation. Paul and his future wife, Georgina Wilkie met at a dance in Remsen. On February 15, 1943, the couple was united in marriage in Sioux City, Iowa. They made their home on a farm north of Marcus. Paul and Georgina were married 66 years.

Paul was one of the members instrumental in the formation of the CO-OP Oil Co. in Marcus. He was employed at the CO-OP for five years.

In 1970, Paul and Georgina retired from farming and moved into Marcus. They lived at the Nelson – Earnest Funeral Home (now Johnson – Earnest) and assisted at the funeral home for several years until their retirement in 1989.

Paul was a member of the Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus and the Knights of Columbus. In his leisure time, Paul enjoyed dancing, fishing and playing golf. He was devoted to his faith and reciting the rosary each morning, was of great importance to him.

Paul will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Georgina Flanagan of Marcus; his brother, Raymond Flanagan of Marcus, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives, caregivers and friends.

Preceding Paul in death are his parents; James and Anna Flanagan; his two sisters and their husbands, Grace and Bill Collins and Mary and Joe Brady; his two brothers, Earl and his wife, Catherine Flanagan and Father Lawrence Flanagan and his sister-in-law, Elaine Flanagan.
