Kenneth Oetken is shot; neighbor held for murder
Sgt. 1st Class Kenneth Oetken, 34, Clarksville, Tenn., a former Le Mars resident and father of ten children, died at 10 p. m. Tuesday at his home of gunshot wounds in the chest. Arrested and charged with first degree murder was Ronnie Hogan, 21, a neighbor who was identified by Sgt. Oetken as his assailant before he died. Hogan is being held in lieu of $5,000 bond and has been bound over to the grand jury. Reports were that the two men had an argument in the garage at the home of the career sergeant who has been stationed at Ft. Campbell, Ky. for several years. The shooting allegedly followed. Ft. Campbell is located across the state line from the Oetken home, 5 Lexington Dr., Bel-Aire sub-division, Clarksville, Tenn. Sgt. Oetken had returned last October from his second tour of duty in Vietnam where he served with the 101st airborne division.
His mother, Mrs. Gretha Oetken, two sisters and three brothers, all of Le Mars, left by car and by plane for Clarksville. Sgt. Oetken who graduated from Le Mars Central high school, had been in the army for 15 years and was stationed at Ft. Campbell except for his tours of duty. His wife is the former Sandra McDaniels, Evansville. Ohio. She is expecting the couple's 11th child. Time and place of funeral services are pending.
Survivors are his wife and ten children of Clarksville; his mother Mrs. Gretha Oetken, Le Mars; four sisters, Mrs. Leonard (Laura) Campbell and Mrs. Tom (Marlene) Arens, both of Le Mars; Mrs. John (Alice) Reid, San Burno, Calif., and Mrs. James (Lucille) Slay, San Antonio; three brothers, Herman, Lawrence and Donald Oetken, all of Le Mars.
