Raymond Arens, 85, of Le Mars passed away Sunday, December 19, 2010 at the Touchstone Living Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars with Reverend Matt Hewitt officiating. Interment with Military Honors provided by Post #3328 V.F.W. and the American Legion Post #220 of Remsen will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Alton, Iowa. Visitations will be after 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at the Carlsen-Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends after 5:00 p.m. followed by a 7:00 p.m. Scriptural Wake Service.
Pallbearers will be Luke Arens, Bryce Arens, Mark Schlesser, Bob Schlesser, Dennis Ernst, and Bill Peshek. Honorary casket bearers will be Kyle Arens, Tony Salerno, Kelsey Arens, Cali Arens, and Casee Arens.
Raymond Nicholas Arens was born September 26, 1925 on the family farm north of Remsen, Iowa to Paul and Mary (Strohbeen) Arens. Ray attended school at Remsen St. Mary’s Catholic School. Following school he worked on the family farm prior to entering the military. On September 20, 1950, Ray entered the United States Army during the Korean War; serving until his Honorable Discharge on June 19, 1952. Ray returned back to Plymouth County to work on the farm for a couple of years and then began a 19 year career with the ASCS office in Plymouth County as a Grain Storage Supervisor. Raymond was united in marriage to Dolores Schlesser on November 26, 1955 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Struble. In 1970, Ray went to work for Good Morning Mills for the next 20 years until his retirement in 1990. In his retirement years, Ray worked part-time for the Le Mars Community School District until 1999.
Ray greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with his family. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, following the Atlanta Braves, and attending high school baseball, softball, and basketball games.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Dolores of Le Mars; 6 sons: Rich Arens of Doon, IA, Tom Arens and his wife Kay of Omaha, NE and their children Kyle, Tony, and Bryce, Dale Arens and his wife Lynette of Iowa City and their children Luke and Kelsey, Dan Arens and his wife Debb of McClelland, IA, Dave Arens and his wife Shannon of Lawton and their children Cali and Casee, and Paul Arens and his wife Tacey of Fort Dodge; In-Laws: Carmen O’Brien of Jacksonville, FL, Phyllis O’Neill of Lemon Grove, CA, and Robert and Ruby Schlesser of Maurice; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Mary (Strohbeen) Arens; 5 siblings: Lavonne Remacle, Valora Rainboth, Melvin Arens, Lorraine Howard and Edna Howard.
