Paul Krohn, 73, of Akron, Iowa passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, Monday, September 28, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

A celebration of his life will take place at a Memorial Mass at 10:30am Friday, October 2, 2009 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron, Iowa. Monsignor Richard Zenk will celebrate. Visitation with the family present will be from 4:00pm to 7pm. Thursday, October 1, 2009 at Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa.

Paul Frederick Krohn was born June 12, 1936 on the family farm in Bloomfield, Nebraska the youngest son of Emil and Amanda (Knaack) Krohn. Paul attended school in Bloomfield, where he was very active in athletics. He graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1954, and received a scholarship to play basketball at Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1958 followed by a master's degree in education in 1963.

It was during his time at Wayne State that he met his future wife, Joyce Navratil. They were united in marriage on May 20, 1961 in Omaha, Nebraska. Paul's first teaching and coaching job was in Winside, Nebraska. In 1963, they moved to Akron, Iowa where he began teaching and coaching in the Akron school district. He coached basketball, football and golf and served as Athletic Director for many years. In 1995, he retired from Akron-Westfield after 32 years of teaching and coaching in the school district.

Paul was a talented young, athlete, playing on regional club baseball teams and later signed with the New York Yankees farm team. He shared his knowledge and passion with countless student athletes through the years.

He was a member of the Iowa Athletic Director's Association, Pheasant's Forever and Duck's Unlimited. He was a charter member of the Sportsman's Club and the Akron Golf Club. Paul also enjoyed officiating many sporting events through the years. He loved to support the Nebraska Cornhuskers, play golf and go hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed reading and collecting antiques. But most of all, he loved the times spent with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Joyce of Akron, Iowa; his three daughters; Kelly (Bryant) and her husband David of Chicago, Il, and their children Amanda and J.D., Kimberly Krohn of Austin, TX, and Kristin (Rose) and her husband Billy of Des Moines, IA and their children, Matthew, Will, Hunter and Libby; two sisters: Ruth Seevers of Minneapolis, MN and Jean Johnson and her husband Dick of Lincoln, NE; a sister-in-law: Joanna Krohn of Lincoln, NE; a brother-in-law: Dr. Frank Navratil and his wife Jean of Cleveland, OH; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother: Robert Krohn and his wife Sara.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be offered to the Paul Krohn Memorial Scholarship fund, to be awarded to a student athlete who exhibits outstanding character and sportsmanship.
