Donald McElhaney, 83, of Cape Coral, Florida, formerly of Akron, Iowa, passed away Saturday, January 31, 2009 at the Hospice House in Cape Coral, Florida.

There will be no local services or visitation. Private burial will be in the family plot in Riverside Cemetery in Akron, Iowa. The Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa is in charge of local arrangements.

Ivan Donald McElhaney was born March 7, 1925 on the family farm in Plymouth County, Iowa, the son of Frank and Jennie (Schuyler) McElhaney. Don graduated from Akron High School. He was united in marriage to Mary Justice on July 8, 1950 in Sioux City, Iowa

In 1961, he and his family moved to Minneapolis, MN where he worked as a computer test technician until his retirement in 1986. In 2003, Don and Mary moved to Cape Coral, Florida.

Survivors include his wife of over 58 years, Mary of Cape Coral, FL; 3 children: Brent McElhaney, Lynn Howe, and Janice Alberts; 8 grandchildren: Jason, Michael, William, Christopher, Cody, Ross, Collin, and Lauren; 3 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings.
