Marie Dewey, 91, of Akron, Iowa, passed away Monday, December 22, 2008 at Hillcrest Health Care in Hawarden, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, December 27, 2008 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron, Iowa. Reverend Dawn Quame will officiate. Interment will follow in Union Creek Cemetery, rural Union County, South Dakota. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. Friday, December 26, 2008, with the family present after 6:00 p.m., and a Prayer service at 7:00 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron. Visitation will resume from 12:30 p.m. until service Saturday at the church.

Marie Dewey was born June 11, 1917 on the family farm near Center Point, South Dakota, the daughter of Antonius and Dagmar (Nielsen) Mikkelsen. She was baptized at her home on September 7, 1919 and confirmed at Spring Valley Lutheran Church in Viborg, South Dakota on June 14, 1931. Marie attended Spring Valley Country School, District 64 in Turner County, South Dakota and graduated from the 8th grade. Later in her life, she attained her G.E.D. from the State of Iowa on December 22, 1975.

Early on, Marie worked for many area families in Viborg. She was united in marriage to Harvey Dewey on June 8, 1941 in Viborg. She and Harvey farmed in Union County, South Dakota and in Plymouth County, Iowa for many years. After retiring, they moved to Akron. Harvey passed away July 11, 2000. Most recently, Marie enjoyed living at the Village North Apartments in Akron.

Marie was a devoted Christian and very proud of her faith. She was a longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. Marie was active in the W.E.L.C.A. having served as secretary for many years. She, along with Mildred Johnson, planned many funeral lunches through the years. Marie was also a member of the Book and Thimble Club and the Rural Home Culture Club. For the past several years, she enjoyed playing in the Akron Care Center Bell Choir. Marie also enjoyed working crossword puzzles. She enjoyed her times spent with family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her 3 children: Carol Larson and her husband Ken of Akron, IA, Elaine Rietz and her husband Robert of Brookings, SD, and Richard Dewey and his wife Nancy of Sioux City, IA; 9 grandchildren: Warren Larson and his wife Vicki of Alta, Iowa, and their family, Jordan, Joshua, Emily, and Elizabeth, Mark Larson of Sioux City, IA, Staci Larson of Centerville, IA, Roy Rietz and his wife Beth of Denver, CO, and their daughter, Cora, Tricia Arthur and her husband Don of Marietta, SC, and their family, Helen, Rose, Morgan, Kendall, and Drew, Becca Rietz of Columbia, SC, Robin Chudnovsky and her husband Emil of Washington, D.C., Dianna Dewey of Sioux City, IA, and her son, Noah, and Sharon Logsdon and her husband Paul of Sioux City, IA, and their family, Michelle, Brittany, and Madison; 2 sisters-in-law: Leone Dewey of Westfield, IA, and Eileen Franklin of Florida; 2 brothers-in-law: Harlyn Dewey of Westfield, IA, and Mahlon Dewey of Washington; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harvey; a son in infancy, Gordon; 2 brothers; and 5 sisters.
