Blaine Ross, 92, of Akron, Iowa passed away, Saturday, September 27, 2008 at Morningside Manor in Alcester, South Dakota.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron. Msgr. Richard Zenk will celebrate. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Akron. Visitations will be Wednesday morning after 9:00 a.m. with a rosary at 10:00 a.m. all at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron.
George Blaine Ross was born August 30, 1916 in Miller, South Dakota, the son of George and Margaret (Burns) Ross. He attended country school near the family farm. In 1934, he moved with his family to Akron, Iowa. Later, they moved to a farm in Union County, South Dakota. Blaine farmed with his family and later on his own. In the 1980’s he moved to a farm in Plymouth County, Iowa. He continued farming until retiring in 1990. He continued living on the farm until moving to Akron in 2002, residing with his sister Berniece Girard. Most recently, he was a resident of Morningside Manor in Alcester, South Dakota.
Blaine was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Akron. He enjoyed going to antique tractor shows and thrashing bees. He also enjoyed working on machinery of all types, often times inventing different tools to make the implements functional again. He was also a craftsman, having built many farm buildings and his home. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his sister, Berniece Girard and her husband Isadore; two nieces: Kathleen Harris of Minneapolis, MN, and Margaret Ann Harris of Akron; two nephews: Gregory Harris of St. Paul, MN and Ricky Garner of San Francisco, CA; 2 great nieces: Jennifer St. James and Anna Wienhold; and 2 great-nephews: Kevin Green and Christopher Green.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Naomi Garner and Vera Ross; and a brother: Vern Ross.
Memorials can be made in Blaine’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association.
