David Morin, 58, of Akron, Iowa, passed away Saturday, September 6, 2008 at Sanford Health in Sioux Falls, SD surrounded by his family.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron, Iowa. Reverend Tanya Sherrill will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron, Iowa. Burial will be at a later date. Visitations will be after 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 9, 2008, with the family present after 6:00 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron.
David Ames Morin was born April 18, 1950 in Springfield, Massachusetts, the son of Roger and Louise (Casper) Morin. He attended school in Massachusetts and California. Following his schooling, he developed the skill of woodworking from his father. He worked with him building boats.
On January 30, 1969, he was drafted into the United States Army. He served his country during the Vietnam War. For his service to his country, he was awarded a Bronze star and two Purple Hearts. He was honorably discharged on January 29, 1975. After returning to the states, he continued in woodworking.
While on a visit to a fellow serviceman’s home in Brookings, South Dakota, he met his future wife, Martha Thorson. They were united in marriage on June 24, 1978 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron. David continued his craftsmanship in woodworking, first with building furniture and later in cabinetry. He owned and operated his own business for many years. In 2003, David was diagnosed with lung cancer. He continued woodworking until his health began to fail.
David was a longtime member of the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron. He and Martha enjoyed traveling. He enjoyed collecting antique clocks, bowling, golfing, fishing, and cooking. Later in life, he loved riding his motorcycle and driving his Corvette. Some of his proudest moments in his life were when his children were born and when his daughter’s were married. Most recently, his greatest joy was with his granddaughter, Addilyn. David was a strong man with a gentle heart. He was always there for anybody, willing to lend a hand at any time. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife of over 30 years, Martha of Akron; 3 children: Jennie Roed and her husband Keith of Des Moines, IA, Seth Morin of Akron, IA, and Callie Dankof and her husband Aaron and their daughter, Addilyn of Silverdale, WA; his mother: Louise Headlee of Laguna Hills, CA; 3 brothers: Daniel Morin and his wife Doris of San Bernardino, CA, Peter Morin and his special friend Katrina of Huntington Beach, CA, and Jeff Morin and his wife Linda of Huntington Beach, CA; his “step-brother”: Craig Simonsen of Akron, IA; and several other family.
He was preceded in death by his father, Roger Morin; his step-father: Joe Headlee; his step-mother: Bobbi Morin; and his father-in-law: Mac Thorson.
